Prof. Em. Andreas Georgopoulos, Margarita Skamantzari

The ICOMOS 2024 Annual General Assembly (AGA) took place in Ouro Preto, Brazil from November 9th to 12th. Right after that the ICOMOS Scientific Symposium was also staged both organized by ICOMOS Brazil. CIPA was well represented in both events by many members, including our President, Prof. Fulvio Rinaudo, the Comm. III co-chair, Em. Prof. Andreas Georgopoulos and the EP members Margarita Skamantzari (newly elected EP chair), Renata Cima Campiotto and Fabiane R. Savino (Figures 1 & 2).

Prof. Rinaudo made several important interventions concerning the involvement of our ISC with the efforts of ICOMOS concerning the risk management of Cultural Heritage. Prof. Em. Georgopoulos presented the progress of updating the CIPA Recording Principles at the ADCOM and Scientific Council meetings.

The Scientific Symposium provided a vibrant platform for interdisciplinary collaboration, exchange of ideas on innovations in cultural heritage conservation, and documentation. The main theme of the Symposium was “Revisiting the Venice Charter” as this year was the 60th anniversary of its adoption. The extensive number of parallel sessions presented a challenge for participants wishing to attend multiple presentations at the same time. Consequently, this led to a lower than anticipated attendance for some of the sessions.

Em. Prof. Andreas Georgopoulos and Margarita Skamantzari presented their thought-provoking work titled “Does Digital Technological Progress Call for a Venice Charter 2.0?” a timely exploration of how advancements in digital technology might reshape the principles of heritage conservation (Figs 3 & 4).

The conference fostered valuable exchanges, and the presence of CIPA Emerging Professionals and ICOMOS EPWGs highlighted the growing impact of younger generations in heritage documentation and innovation.
