NARRATE: Advancing Digital Documentation of Ecclesiastical Cultural Heritage

The preservation of ecclesiastical cultural heritage is undergoing a transformative shift through digital documentation. The ERASMUS+ funded project, NARRATE – “Needs for Digital Recording and Documentation of Ecclesiastical Cultural Treasures in Monasteries and Temples”, is dedicated to ensuring that these invaluable historical artifacts are digitally safeguarded for future generations.

A significant aspect of NARRATE is its commitment to accessibility. The project website offers a variety of free resources, including educational materials introducing clergy and heritage professionals to digital documentation, technical guidelines on best practices for digitising ecclesiastical artifacts, and recordings of training webinars that provide practical insights and demonstrations. These resources serve as essential tools for those interested in enhancing their knowledge and skills in digital heritage preservation.

Understanding that clergy members may be unfamiliar with digital tools, NARRATE conducted targeted, user-centered surveys to gauge their specific needs and concerns. This direct engagement ensured that the developed tools and materials aligned with clergy expectations, making digital documentation more approachable and relevant. To support its educational mission, the project also organized interactive training webinars, featuring live demonstrations of digital documentation techniques, technical guidance on practical applications, and supportive forums for ongoing discussions and troubleshooting.

Beyond online resources, NARRATE has successfully hosted international events to further the discourse on digital heritage preservation. The International Conference on the Documentation of Ecclesiastical Cultural Heritage, held in Sofia, Bulgaria, gathered experts and stakeholders to discuss best practices in digitisation, ethical considerations in cultural heritage documentation, and case studies showcasing collaborative approaches. The Educational Workshop in Istanbul, Türkiye, supported by CIPA – Heritage Documentation, provided hands-on training through interactive sessions, practical demonstrations of digital recording techniques, and technical support to enhance participants’ confidence and skills in digital preservation.

NARRATE has fostered international collaboration by bringing together partners from Greece, Bulgaria, and Turkey. By sharing expertise and resources, the project has promoted comprehensive and standardised methods for digital documentation across regions.

By addressing clergy concerns, offering accessible educational resources, and fostering global cooperation, NARRATE has significantly contributed to the ongoing efforts in digital heritage preservation. The project’s outcomes serve as a valuable foundation for future initiatives, ensuring that ecclesiastical cultural treasures remain accessible and appreciated for generations to come.
